Northeast Lakeview College Hosts Beam Signing & Topping Out Ceremony for New Veterans Center

January 31, 2025

Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) hosted a Beam Signing and Topping Out Ceremony for its new Veterans Center on January 31, 2025.  Employees, community members, and special guests of the College had the opportunity to leave their signature on a beam that will be used on the building.  During the Topping Out Ceremony, attendees heard from College and Alamo Colleges officials, as well as Veterans in NLC’s service area who helped advocate for the need for this building. The ceremony concluded with the final beam being placed on the building to celebrate this construction milestone.

At approximately 11,000 sq. ft the building will provide a stand-alone facility that will offer dedicated services and support to our Veteran and military-connected students. Some of the enhanced services include focused advising, military education benefits information, and assistance with the transition from military to civilian life. The new center will also re-establish a Veteran mentoring program that matches incoming veterans with current students to support the transition process from military life to academia, enhancing student success in the classroom. The facility will also include a dedicated space to host organizations and other events that support Veterans such as faculty support in the classroom, military culture, and learning styles.

“We are excited to be one step closer to giving our Veteran students and their family members a space they can call their own,” says Dr. Veronica Garcia, NLC president. “This Center is a direct response to the veteran student population growth we have seen, with about 11% of students enrolled at NLC using veteran benefits last year.”

The facility is being constructed from funds that were part of the state appropriations provided to the Alamo Colleges District for the 2022-2023 biennium. Building renderings and a construction timeline are available on the college website.  A grand opening for the building is scheduled for November 2025.
